The Municipality of Monticiano embraces an intact and wild territory, harsh and hospitable at the same time. The surrounding woods are rich in centuries-old oak and chestnut trees. It is located on a hill overlooking the river Merse, not far from the abbey complex of San Galgano, which can be reached by taking a magnificent walk, among other things. Heritage of this territory are also the pure and crystalline waters of the Farma river which, before joining the course of the Merse and flowing into the Ombrone, marks the natural border between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto.
In the village you can admire the church of Sant’Agostino with the chapter house of the former convent decorated with frescoes by Bartolo di Fredi, Guidoriccio Cozzarelli and Giovanni di Paolo. The Gothic-style church is one of the oldest hermitages of the Augustinian order.
To see the hamlet of San Lorenzo a Merse with the ancient castle and the Romanesque church; the small village of Castello di Tocchi; the ruins of the fortifications of Castellaccio, Monte Quoio and Renna.
